Heading South, Serena Hitches a Ride

When summer ended in New England, Serena’s crew prepared her to sail for the U.S. Virgin Islands, and arranged to hitch a ride aboard the Schippersgracht of Amsterdam.

The boat-toting vessel arrived in Portsmouth, R.I., on November 5th, lifted Serena high out of the water and secured her on deck. The ship made stops in Philadelphia and Freeport, Grand Bahama, before arriving just outside of Crown Bay, St. Thomas, in mid-November—see last photo.

Thanks to Captain Eddie for the photos; we’ll look forward to seeing more of Serena in warmer waters soon.

IN THE EARLY ‘60s, OUR 74-FOOT FEADSHIP BUILD WAS IN THE SUPERYACHT CLASS.  Feadship, the Dutch builder known worldwide for its magnificent superyachts, first constructed the steel hull of Serena in 1964 to the design of legendary Italian boatbuilder Carlo Riva. In a nod to that era, when a relatively few private yachts of Serena’s scale were built, a recent edition of Pilot, the boatbuilder’s magazine, featured our yacht.

“In the 1960s fewer than fifty 30-plus metre yachts sailed the world’s seas,” wrote the author. “Half a century later, this lovely Feadship continues to turn heads, thanks to a total rebuild.

“She’s a fine example of how a yacht can retain her original historical feel while remaining open to technical improvements…Serena is now fitted with the latest thinking on vibration attenuation, noise reduction, fuel consumption, heat insulation, and stabilization.”

The full article is posted in our Media section, concluding with the fact that Serena has been named the Feadship Heritage Fleet Flagship this year and “her current owners being active ambassadors for the association in the United States throughout 2019.”

Serena is looking forward to taking part in the Feadship Heritage Fleet rendezvous later this summer in Newport, R.I.

  • Serena’s Commissioning

    Serena’s Commissioning

The celebrants included several representatives from Feadship who traveled from The Netherlands to participate in the commissioning ceremony.

H.J. de Vries shared his memories of the boat being launched at the legendary De Vries boatyard back in 1964. Other representatives of Feadship announced that Serena will serve as the first official flagship for the Feadship Heritage Fleet in the United States. Reverend Mary Johnstone gave a benediction followed by a formal declaration of commissioning by New York Yacht Club Commodore Phil Lotz. Members of the de Vries family traveled to Newport from The Netherlands to join in the celebration.

This most recent commissioning of Serena was the latest chapter in her history as a product of the Feadship consortium.

“Until Berg went on vacation to St. Tropez in 2008, he had never considered purchasing a boat. And then he saw the Carlo Riva-designed Feadship. And, well, plans changed. As any boat owner knows, the vessel usually has the final say over any plans. And since Berg bought Serena that has certainly been the case. Each plan — from buying the yacht to her refit to scheduling her travels — has seen alteration and change

Serena, then named Alcor, was at anchor when Berg first saw her while swimming off a friend’s yacht. So he swam over to take a closer look at the unique vessel. While treading water, he first spoke to the captain and then the owner and after five minutes the72-year-old Italian finally invited him onboard.”

    Riva’s History

    Riva’s History

The Riva boatyard was established in 1842 on Lake Iseo in Sarnico, Italy after a devastating storm damaged the boats of the local fishermen. A young shipbuilder and craftsman – new to the area and named Pietro Riva – repaired most of the crafts, thus winning the trust of the locals. This was the beginning of the legend of Riva.

Riva rapidly gained great respect and recognition for creating boats of unmatched style and personality. Ernesto Riva succeeded his father Pietro and introduced internal combustion engines on Riva boats, thus giving rise to an era of large cargo and passenger boats operating on the lake. After World War I, Serafino Riva turned the boatyard’s precious crafts into a real brand; emphasis shifted from transportation to power boating, which at the time was still dawning.

The 1950s were the years of Serena‘s designer Carlo Riva, who had been driven by boundless passion for boats and the family business since he was a child. Riva, by then, had become synonymous with elegance, status and perfection. Selected materials of the highest quality, a painstaking care for the tiniest details, unparalleled, long-standing expertise and craftsmanship – Riva’s creations became the object of desire for the aristocracy, award winning athletes, successful businessmen and movie stars. In the decade of the Italian industrial revolution, dominated by the myth of speed and racing cars, “l’Ingegnere”, as Carlo Riva is called, sensed the importance of this phenomenon and created a series of wooden yachts characterized by unique, unmistakable design features.

In September 1969, Carlo Riva, frustrated by a tough union climate, sold the shipyard to the U.S. company Whittaker, maintaining the role of Chairman and General Manager, from which he resigned in 1971.

Today, the Ferretti Group of Italy owns Riva and maintains the original shipyard in Sarnico as well as a production center in La Spezia.
